Evaluation techniques of metallic biomaterials in vitro
نویسنده
چکیده
Metals and alloys are widely used as biomedical materials and are important in medicine and they cannot be replaced with ceramics or polymers at present mainly because of their high strength and toughness. Since safety is the most important property of biomaterials, corrosion-resistant materials such as stainless steel, Co–Cr–Mo alloy, commercially pure titanium, and titanium alloys are employed as biomaterials. Evaluation techniques for corrosion with culturing cells, the characterization of reconstruction of surface oxide film, fretting fatigue, cytotoxicity, and biocompatibility are reviewed in this paper. These techniques are original and characteristics in the field of biomaterials that should contribute to the proper evaluations of biomaterials in vitro. q 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Evaluation of Surface Characteristic Changes of WaveOne Gold and WaveOne Single Reciprocating Files Using Scanning Electron Microscopy: An in-vitro Study
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to evaluate surface topography of WaveOne Gold (WOG) and WaveOne (WO) files using SEM before and after use. Methods: Twelve primary files from each system were scanned for surface defects before instrumentation at 100x and 750x. Each file was planned ti be used to instrument six root canals and then examined under SEM after preparing one, three and six...
متن کاملIn Vitro behavior of mechanically activated nanosized Si-Mg-doped fluorapatite
Hydroxyapatite (HA) is perhaps the most attractive material for bone repair, replacement and regeneration, due to its chemical composition and crystallographic structure which are similar to those of natural bone mineral. However, replacement of various elements and compounds in HA, could improve biological properties of this material. The aim of this study was preparation, characterization and...
متن کاملWear Characteristics of Metallic Biomaterials: A Review
Metals are extensively used in a variety of applications in the medical field for internal support and biological tissue replacements, such as joint replacements, dental roots, orthopedic fixation, and stents. The metals and alloys that are primarily used in biomedical applications are stainless steels, Co alloys, and Ti alloys. The service period of a metallic biomaterial is determined by its ...
متن کاملDegradation and cytocompatibility of magnesium alloys for medical applications – an introduction to methods and observations
INTRODUCTION: Magnesium (Mg) alloys are promising biodegradable metallic materials for orthopedic implants due to their many desirable properties. Mg has a mechanical strength and elastic modulus similar to cortical bone [1], and the degradation products can be naturally metabolized [2]. Furthermore, increased bone growth has been observed surrounding Mg derived implants in vivo [3]. However, r...
متن کاملIn-vitro study of Ketoprofen release from synthesized silica aerogels (as drug carriers) and evaluation of mathematical kinetic release models
Silica aerogels are porous and extremely lightweight nano-materials shows interesting properties. These materials, because of biocompatibility, non-harmful to the body and special physical characteristics such as large surface area and low density have great potential for use in a drug delivery system (DDS). The focus of this study is the evaluation of the effects of silica aerogels on improvin...
